Chambal Wildlife Safari – Mela Camp

A Safari Lodge Where the Chambal Still Runs Wild

Chambal Wildlife Safari – Mela Camp is an eco safari lodge set inside the 125-acre Arjun Stud Farms estate at Jarar, in Bah tehsil of Agra district, Uttar Pradesh. The lodge sits on the edge of the National Chambal Sanctuary — a 400 km stretch of free-flowing river that holds the world’s largest wild population of gharial, alongside Gangetic river dolphins, mugger crocodiles and more than 320 recorded bird species. The Taj Mahal is roughly 65 kilometres away, about ninety minutes by road. The wilderness starts the moment the tarmac ends.

Boat safaris on one of India's cleanest rivers

Dawn and late-afternoon boat safaris with naturalists and boatmen who have worked this stretch of the Chambal for years. They know which sandbank the gharials favour, which bend the dolphins surface at, and where the Indian Skimmers are nesting this season.

Eco cottages on a 125-acre estate

The lodge occupies the grounds of the historic Jarar Mela — a fairground that once drew thousands. Today it holds orchards, gardens, a mature mini-forest and a small number of purpose-built eco cottages, spread far enough apart that the property never feels crowded.

Conservation-led, ninety minutes from the Taj Mahal

Every stay runs through the Chambal Eco Preservation & Welfare Society, established in 2014. The lodge is the natural wild extension to an Agra itinerary — and the easiest place in India to see a gharial in open water.
